Imagining the “Bank of the Future” in Lebanon

A select group of senior heads of business in commercial banking, business banking, consumer banking, technology and operations gathered for the dialogue on “Imagining the ‘Bank of the Future’ in Lebanon” to discuss the challenges and opportunities that banks face in preparing to win in the race to digital transformation.

Held at Four Seasons, Beirut, Lebanon on August 26, 2016.

Key macro-level trends from the Lebanon Country Assessment, presented at this dialogue:

  • Despite the economic slowdown retail banking has grown significantly over the past years and contributes to about 10-15% of the total bank assets
  • Strong credit cards and payments market
  • ITMs (Interactive Teller Machines) have for the first time made an appearance in the Lebanese market, allowing for live video conferencing with personal tellers
  • One of the main challenges is the ability to integrate fintechs with banks’ daily operations
  • Digitisation of front line processes remains difficult (no digital signature allowed yet, for instance)
  • Customer loyalty and centricity important to maintain competitive advantage
